Curriculum Vitae

Emiliana Mangone is Full Professor of Sociology of Culture and Communication Precesses at University of Salerno (Italy), Department of Political and Communication Sciences. She is a Director of the Narratives and social Changes-International Research Group (2020-2026), and she was Director of the International Centre for Studies and Research “Mediterranean Knowledge” (2015-2020). She is a member of national and international Research Units of different sociological fields and mostly based on interdisciplinary approach. There are several stages in Emiliana Mangone’s academic and research life:

(2005-2013) - Social policies, health and training of social and health workers: In these years, she acquired a decade of experience in the field of social policies and communication by practicing the profession of Sociologist at Italian public institutions.

(2012-2016) - Cultural and institutional systems: In these years, she developed studies in the field of cultural and institutional systems, with particular attention to the dynamics of social representations of relationships and knowledge as key elements for human action, and in migration studies.

(2016-current) - Thought of Pitirim A. Sorokin: In the last years, Emiliana Mangone has rediscovered the work and thought of Pitirim A. Sorokin through a critical analysis of the renowned sociologist’s theories while highlighting some of his more overlooked ones. This discover took place also with updates of these theories by discussing their relevance in current cultural contexts. These studies aim to extend the work started by Sorokin on the promotion and application of “integralism”, he uses this method to analyse socio-cultural phenomena, propose new policy, and enhance the development of humanity from the cultural point of view. With the reinterpretation of Sorokin’s works and thought, part of Mangone’s research and scientific production are oriented towards the study of positive phenomena that involves human beings such as altruism, gratitude, solidarity.

(2019-current) - Narratives and Social changes: Currently, Mangone’s attention focus on this specific topic. Narrative has in itself a very high degree of rhetoric – certainly accentuated by the forms of communication adopted. Potential questions to be asked for this topic include, but are by no means limited to, the following ones: What is narrative? And what use do individuals and collectives make of it? Who builds the story? And above all who tells it and how does he/she tell it?

On all these topics, over the years, she has presented many interventions (by invitation and proposal accepted) in national and international conferences, and published books, essays in books, and numerous articles in international scientific journals. Finally, she is also a member of the editorial boards of national and international scientific journals, having served over the years as a reviewer for scientific journals and publishing houses.
