PRESENTATION AND OBJECTIVES

The I INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP ON "METHODOLOGICAL ADVANCES AND APPLICATIONS IN SOCIAL SCIENCES: QUANTITATIVE, QUALITATIVE AND COMPUTATIONAL NEW STRATEGIES" will take place at the University of Huelva on 7-8 July 2022.

Methodological aspects of any research are of transversal interest for the Social Sciences, and the motivation for learning and improving the knowledge of methods, techniques and software applied to social research is common. Therefore, this Workshop is proposed with the idea of sharing methodological innovations in social research with other researchers and diverse applications of methods and strategies in actual research.

Together with the advances and applications in quantitative and qualitative areas in the Social Sciences, on many occasions developed with hybrid designs or mixed methods, due to their current relevance, this Workshop also aims to encourage the presentation and discussion of works where the computational component is essential. More specifically, when programming languages such as R or Python (or others) have been incorporated into the research processes, which require specific programming skills or work in interdisciplinary teams by social scientists.

This I Workshop is co-organized by the Andalusian Association of Sociology (AAS), the Research Center "Social Studies and Social Intervention" (ESEIS), the Faculty of Social Work and the Center for Research in Contemporary Thought and Innovation for Social Development (COIDESO) at the Universidad de Huelva, Spain. Also, this event is co-organized by the Narratives & Social Changes international group – International Research Group (from the University of Salerno, Italy), the Interdisciplinary Center of Social Sciences of the University of Évora (CICS.NOVA.UÉvora), and the Institute of Humanities and Social Sciences (INHUS), a unit dependent on the National Council for Scientific Research (CONICET) and the National University of Mar del Plata (UNMdP) in Argentine.

The Workshop connects with the interests of various projects of these research teams that address, transversally, methodological aspects. The main idea of this Call for papers is to bring together presentations focused on the methodological and technical aspects of their research and the decision processes related to the Methodological strategy. To the extent that many methodological aspects are transversal to Science in general, the Workshop is open to receiving communications from other disciplines whose work may be connected to the methodological challenges present in Sociology, Social Work or other Social Sciences, as well as, in general terms, in Computational Sciences.

WORKING LANGUAGES

Communications in Spanish, English, Italian and Portuguese are welcomed. However, it is recommended to have written PowerPoint presentations in English to make more accessible a fluid communication between attendees.

MODALITY

The Workshop will take place online through Zoom, technically coordinated by the University of Huelva, Spain. The University of Huelva team and other participants will also be able to follow the Workshop in person at the Universidad de Huelva, Campus El Carmen, José Isidoro Morales building, Classroom B.1.

The objective of these three working groups, rather than focusing on presenting and discussing the results of the investigations, is to discuss ongoing or completed investigations from the perspective of the research methods, techniques or strategies that support them. From the conviction that each investigation, although it shares basic parameters with others, is unique, we are interested in learning from works that present these methodological details. From limitations during the different stages of the research process to knowing and discussing the innovations of these works in the research process, mainly if they can be applied to other scenarios. The communications can be focused on presenting the advances obtained by implementing new methods, techniques or tools, as well as describing how different quantitative, qualitative or mixed methods investigations have been produced.

Computational Social Sciences: Social research supported by programming languages

In this session, we are interested in communications that present works focused on Computational Sciences, highlighting research's methodological and technical aspects. Aspects such as: What languages/programs/packages were used? Why were these used and not others? At what point in the research process were they used (data download, analysis, etc.)? Who implemented it: social scientist or others? Use of algorithms. Has the code been published somewhere for other researchers to see? What advantages and disadvantages were obtained when developing social research with code support? What challenges did the team have to overcome? How did it affect the research results? Main innovations. Future challenges.

CERTIFICATION

Attendance at the Workshop and presenting a paper will be certified at the end of the event.

DEADLINE FOR SUBMITTING PROPOSALS

Proposals for communication may be submitted up to June 30, 2022. After this date, on July 4, acceptance, assignment of days and time for the oral presentations, and the final program of the Workshop, will be communicated.
